What to do on the island?

The Canary Islands are often associated with black sand beaches, but there are few of these on Lanzarote, despite the past volcanic eruptions on the island. Indeed, the vast majority of the 90 plus beaches sport either golden or white sands.

The most beautiful beaches on the island are a bit more off the beaten track and generally less crowded than the beaches in resort. They have also been largely left in their natural state — which means most have no facilities and any cleaning is left to the tide. Papagayo and Famara are the most stunning on the island. Orzola at the northern tip of the island is home to a number of wild and natural beaches. The best known of these is Caleton Blanco (opposite), the last beach before you hit the village on the road from the Jameos del Agua.

El Golfo, home to Lanzarote´s famous Green Lagoon has two stunning black sand beaches. One lies just in front of the lagoon itself. The other can be found within the village — in front of the seemingly endless row of fab fish restaurants.

Not only is there good cusine on the island, but also good wines, made on-site at some of the many vineyards dotted in between the islands ancient lava flows. These impressive vineyards 'Bodegas' offer samples of their home-grown crisp whites and smooth well rounded reds. Well worth a visit on a sunny afternoon!

One of the most outstanding beauties of the island is the Timanfya national park. It covers 8km with 32 craters of old volcanoes within it's boarders, which all exploded over 6 years in the 18 century. This astounding place is still active and you can watch fire and water demonstrations of the power which still lies beneath the surface. The Cesar Manrique destined restaurants cooks all it's meat on the fire from the volcano beneath which provides a unique dining experience.

Cesar Manrique is Lanzarote's most famous artist and his works are evident all around the island. His sculptures brighten up round-about's and his artwork adorns many walls. A visit to his old home, now museum is a must, as is the Jameos del Aqua.

There are 2 golf courses on the Island at Tias and Costa Teguise and "The Colors" sits conveniently between both of them. One course is located on the outskirts of Tias and Puerto del Carmen 15 minutes away from the Villa, it is new and only opened this year. The other course is in Costa Teguise also approximately 15 minutes in the opposite direction.

Other things to do on the island include camel riding, dune buggy adventures, water park trills and spills, diving, boat trips etc...
