May is traditionally the month
when the alpine regions transform into lush green pastures, as the
last of the snow recedes up the mountains. The spring flowers
burst through the soil covering the meadows with the blues of forget-me-nots
and yellows of buttercups. The forest floors also become littered
with periwinkles and violets. The variety of flora is astounding
and quite a contrast to the brilliant white or recent months. The
cows once again return to graze on the mountains, and the farms spring
back into action. The clean air becomes perfumed with the sweet scent
of grass and flowers as the sun's heat starts to intensify. It
is a perfect time for exploring the mountains. |

During the spring we also run once weekly trips to the beautiful lakeside town of Annecy. It nestles in a spectacular setting where the mountains meet the water, casting life-like reflections in the lake. The interesting an historic old town quarter, has often been called ‘little Venice’ because of the beautifully coloured arcaded houses, Italian style wells and canals. There is plenty to see and do in this ancient town, including some fabulous shops and restaurants. A cruise around the lake emphasises the magnificence and uniqueness of the scenery, and if the temperatures are warm enough a swim in the lake is possible at one of the free beaches which line its shores. Further south about an hour away is the largest and deepest natural lake in France is the nearby Lac du Bourget, whose shores are lined by the impressive and historic town of Aix-les-Bains. Dating back to the Romans this splendid town, with it's lively streets and elegant palace hotels, provides an interesting day excursion. Cruises around the lake also highlight the towns impressive mountain setting. Also boarding it's shores are an abundance of vineyards who produce the local Gamay and Cotes du Rhone wines. Why not combine a boat trip visiting the famous Abbaye Hautecombe, and canals of the northern lake shores, a little wine tasting en-route at a local vineyard and fabulous lunch of fresh Perch from the lake. Lac Leman, with Geneva at it's base provides yet another lake destination, where an enjoyable cruise can be taken, varying in length from 35 minutes to Lausanne or 10hrs for the complete tour. |

| Spring is also a brilliant time of year to explore cheese and wine production in the region. On our special ‘cheese and wine’ weeks we visit the local Reblechon, Tomme and goat farms and co-operatives, taste a few samples and learn how the cheeses are made. These local cheeses are then incorporated into the evening menu allowing our guests to experience some traditional Savoyard dishes. Visits to the local market, also introduce a variety of other local produce, including the infamous charcuterie. | ![]() |

The Haute Savoie produces some interesting wines, which you will have the opportunity to try during your stay or if you join us on one of our 'wine tours'. However, the best wines are to be found on the banks of the Rhone, Lac leman or the foothills of the Aosta valley. Join us for a week of exploration in France, Switzerland and Italy to sample the delights and appreciate the many varieties of wines these three countries have to offer. Along the way you will also have time to sample local specialties and soak up the unique architecture of the many chateaus and wine yards. Put your knowledge to the test in our 'blind tasting' evenings and learn a bit more about the grape varieties and environments which contribute to the wines unique flavours. |

| Artist weeks | ||
Spring and Autumn are the best time to appreciate the colours of the alps and capture them on canvas or film. During June, early July and September we run a variety of 'Artist weeks'. These weeks usually focus on a artistic theme. Some of our most recent weeks include watercolour painting photography and quilting. The alpine environment has proven to be a popular choice with watercolour
artists. BEE MORRISON who is an acclaimed painter and author
has been running her painting holidays in the Aravis with the help
of gravité. Bee is very much a 'hands on' artist offering
4 hours on-site tuition per day, most of it on a one to one basis,
with plenty of free time to explore the stunning scenery in Repesoir,
Col des Ann and Lac de Confin, as well as the lovely architecture
of La Clusaz, Annecy and the Chateau at Menthon. Bee also incorporates
plenty of 'studio time' to demonstrate a range of key techniques
in preparation for working on location. |
