Drop off point at Col de Croix Fry Start in front of the Centre de Vacances and head along the marked trail (no.18) to the left - (you can go either way at this point, which takes you on the same circuit). The walk begins through pine trees on a well trodden path across little streams on the edge of the plateau looking down into the Manigod Valley, there are a few well hidden chalets along route, who are making the most of the stunning views if you can glimpse them through the trees. Closer to the summit of Colonban the path opens out so you can see marshy plains and a few remote chalets (Les Follieres) on the plateau. In Autumn this scrub land is also covered with Myrtille bushes. These can be picked and used in tarts or jam, and have a very similar taste to black currents. At this point you are roughly one third of the way round the circuit. Next you cross a stream and then encounter a ‘beware of the beasts sign’ - don’t be alarmed - they just mean cows! So starts another uphill climb through some scrubby trees which brings you to a large rock and some sign posts. Here there is a chance to deviate off the path towards the Croix de Colomban. Well worth the extra trek, as you are rewarded with a stunning view down the Thônes Valley and of Tournette. Goodness knows how they built the cross up there! Double back on yourselves towards previous path and take in the stunning views of the whole Aravis range a perfect place for a panorama picture. Once you reach the original path and carry on in the direction of the Pointe de Beauregard (1644m). Here there are some restaurants (but they are only open in the winter and summer seasons I’m afraid!). Then it’s downhill all the way on a rough road through pine forests with fantastic view of Mont Blanc directly in front of you through the Col des Aravis. You should end up back at the Centre de Vacances where you started. Some other suggested walks are; |
